How to work out how much material you need

Measure, add waste, then price it

Measure the job first. Length times width, or height for a wall, gives the area in square metres.

Add your waste allowance on top. With the sample figures, 10% on 20 square metres means buying 22.

We hold no sourced waste figure for any trade, so the allowance is always yours to set.

Then price it at your merchant rate. Check the unit: a price per tin is not a price per square metre.

Use the materials cost in the job profit margin calculator.

Need to price the van behind the job? Use the van cost calculator.

Price the labour by the square metre with the price per m² calculator.
